Isla Grande, in the Caribbean Sea, is easily accessible by road, -it takes merely a two hour auto-ride from Panama city-, and only five minutes by boat from our parking lot in the mainland.
On your way to the island you will pass the historic town of portobelo, founded 400 years ago by the Spanish conquistadores and where Sir Francis Drake, the famous corsair, met his death.
This town was also the site of famous commercial fairs where goods from Europe, brought in Spanish galleons, were exchanged for gold and silver bullion extracted from South America.
The present population, of afrocolonial origin, can be traced back to the period of massive forced migrations, specially from the regions of Guinea and the Congos, from where they take their name ¨Congos¨. Believers in magic, they still practice a rhythmic dance with its contagious drumbeat. You can visit as well the cathedral of the Black Christ, credited for numerous miracles.
A short fifteen minute drive from Portobelo you will arrive to the village of Juan Gallego, where Bananas Resort has a parking facility. There you may leave your car under proper vigilance and board the boat which will take you to your final destination.
